3 beautiful books written entirely in verse

I wasn’t sure if I would like a book written in verse but I have found some that have been so engrossing that I’m now searching for more.

I’ve read quite a handful of novels-in-verse but these three are by far my favourites so far.

1. Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

This book was a lot more emotional than I expected but it was a really great and engrossing read. The two main characters, Camino and Yahaira, discover they are sisters after their father dies in a plane crash. It’s a story of loss, acceptance and forgiveness.

2. The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta

This is one of my favourite books of the year so far. It’s truly wonderful. It follows Michael from childhood right through to university as he comes out and discovers the art of performing as a drag artist. Michael is proud to be black and gay and learns that being true to himself is more important than anything.

3. Toffee by Sarah Crossman

This book was a lot more raw and thought- provoking than I had expected. After leaving her home, Allison becomes a runaway, seeking refuge in what she believes is an abandoned home in a seaside town.  She befriends an older lady, Marla, who has dementia. Marla mistakes her for someone named Toffee.

  2. Two I’d recommend if you haven’t already read them, that aren’t ENTIRELY verse, but have that mixed media feel are Lover’s Dictionary, and the Realm of Possibility by David Levithan. Ignoring the controversy around the author, the books themselves I loved, and it’s been years since I’ve visited them, but I can still remember them quite clearly!
