I never set any New Year’s resolutions because I know I would never complete them. But I do set bookish goals.
I’ve set two reading goals for 2021.
The first is to read 60 books. If I know ahead of time how much I want to read, it motivates me to pick up a book more often rather than scrolling through my phone or watching the telly.
My second goal is to read more books that I enjoy, that means if I’m not enjoying a book, I can DNF it. I find that if I try to force myself to read something I don’t enjoy, I’m going to end up in a reading slump for months which isn’t fun. There are also so many great books I know I’ll enjoy, it seems silly to waste time reading something I don’t love, or even like.
Do you set New Year’s resolutions or bookish goals?

These are great goals! I’m hoping to read at least 5 books this year. I know that people are setting their reading goals a lot higher but I need to keep reminding myself that reading isn’t a competition and it should be fun. I love your goal about being allowed to DNF a book. I usually force myself to keep reading even if I don’t enjoy it, but it just makes me want to read less. I hope you enjoy everything you read this year ♡

Yes definitely! I feel like there’s too much pressure but everyone should just do what’s best for them. Plus not everyone has the time to read hundreds of books. Five is a good amount and I hope they’re ones you end up enjoying! And thank you. You should try DNF’ing a book if you’re not enjoying it. I hate the feeling of dread about reading something I’ve started if it’s not bringing me joy 💜

It’s very sensible to DNF a book you’re not liking. Life’s too short and there are too many other books out there 😉

That’s very true! Not enough time to read them all as it is haha

I have a hard time doing a DNF. I usually continue to plow through a book no matter how much it cost bores me, which is really a waste of time. I was successful recently though in closing the cover on the 19th century Russian novel Oblamov.

I get what you mean, especially if you’ve invested so much time in the book but it does feel great when you do decide to put it down and end up reading something you enjoy more!
