Mini wrap-up: June 2024

I’m not sure how we’re already in the month of July and half-way through the year but I thought I would wrap-up my June reads. Even though it’s been quite a busy month, I still read more books than I anticipated. One novel was for a book club I joined a couple of months ago, some others were proof copies from publishers.

My most surprising read of the month was White Nights by Dostoyevsky. It’s a novella that’s beautifully written about unrequited love. It’s an addicting, heart wrenching read that will linger on your mind for a good while after finishing. It’s made me want to pick up more of his work – Crime and Punishment in particular.

The two poetry collections I read last month were Serious Concerns by Wendy Cope and The Hurting Kind by Ada Limon. Both have completely different styles – with Cope being a little more humorous. On a hunt to try and discover and understand poetry, The Orange is still my favourite, which is also in this collection by Cope. However, the writing style of Limon was engrossing, beautiful and a little more complex.

Lucy Foley’s The Midnight Feast is my favourite read of the month and one that took me by complete surprise. It’s a fast-paced, all-consuming, intense thriller. You can read my review of it here.

One of my go-to authors since teenage years is Lindsey Kelk and I was over the moon to be sent an early copy of her newest novel, Love Story to review. It’s a rom-com set over the course of one weekend. In some ways, it’s a bit meta as the main character is a big time romance author, hiding her identity from her fans and family. This wasn’t my favourite of her books but it was still enjoyable. My review can be found here.

The books I read and my ratings:

The Hurting Kind by Ada Limon – 4.5/5

The Midnight Feast by Lucy Foley – 4.5/5

White Nights by Fyodor Dostoyevsky – 4/5

Serious Concerns by Wendy Cope – 4/5

Us in the Before and After by Jenny Valentine – 3.5/5

Love Story by Lindsey Kelk – 3/5

Suddenly a Murder by Lauren Munoz – 2.5/5
