Reading update: Current read and what I plan to read next

Last read: Penance by Eliza Clark

This was a brilliant book – taking a critical look at how we consume true crime in the media and for entertainment.

Blurb:

Do you know what happened already? Did you know her? Did you see it on the internet? Did you listen to a podcast? Did the hosts make jokes?

Did you see the pictures of the body?

Did you look for them?

It’s been nearly a decade since the horrifying murder of sixteen-year-old Joan Wilson rocked the small seaside town of Crow-on-Sea. Based on hours of interviews with witnesses and family members, and even correspondence with the killers themselves, journalist Alec Z. Carelli has constructed what he claims is the ‘definitive account’ of the crime. It’s a riveting snapshot of lives scarred by tragedy, and a town left in turmoil.

Current read: Girl, Goddess, Queen by Bea Fitzgerald

A book club I’m participating in has picked this book for the August read. I’m intrigued by the mythology and this modern take on Hades.

Blurb:

To hell with love, this goddess has other plans…

Thousands of years ago, the gods told a lie: how Persephone was a pawn in the politics of other gods. How Hades kidnapped Persephone to be his bride. How her mother, Demeter, was so distraught she caused the Earth to start dying.

The real story is much more interesting.

Persephone wasn’t taken to hell: she jumped. There was no way she was going to be married off to some smug god more in love with himself than her.

Now all she has to do is convince the Underworld’s annoyingly sexy, arrogant and frankly rude ruler, Hades, to fall in line with her plan. A plan that will shake Mount Olympus to its very core.

But consequences can be deadly, especially when you’re already in hell . . .

Next read: The List by Yomi Adegoke

I’ve heard so many great things about The List. It’s also been compared to Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid which I loved.

Blurb:

ONLINE RUMOURS. REAL LIFE TROUBLE.

Ola Olajide, a high-profile journalist at Womxxxnmagazine, is marrying the love of her life in one month’s time. She and her fiancé Michael seem to have it all.

That is, until one morning when they both wake up to the same message:

‘Oh my god, have you seen The List?’

It began as a list of anonymous allegations about abusive men. Now it’s been published online. Ola made her name breaking exactly this type of story. But today, Michael’s name is on there.

Will the truth behind The List change everything for both of them?
