Reading update: What I’ve been reading and what I plan to read next

It’s been a while since I shared what I’ve been reading. I thought I would share my current read, last read and next read.

I’m definitely getting into the autumnal mood with some of these cosier books.

Last read: Not Quite Dead Yet by Holly Jackson

This is Holly Jackson’s first adult fiction book to date. I think it fits more into the new adult genre as the characters still come across as quite young. It was an engaging story with lots of twists and turns. But unfortunately I didn’t love it as much as her other books. I think I’ll rate it a 3/5. Some of the characters didn’t interest me that much and while the book kept me hooked while I was reading it, once I put it down I wasn’t eager to pick it back up again. Holly Jackson is still a pro in writing this genre and there were a lot of shocking revelations I didn’t see coming.

Current read: She’s Always Hungry by Eliza Clark

Eliza Clark is quickly becoming one of my all-time favourite authors and her short story collection, She’s Always Hunrgy, is blowing me away. I’m currently reading this at the same time as one of my friends (hi Jayne!) by reading a story a day. There have been some stories we’ve found really fascinating like Extinction Event and others like Goth GF that we didn’t love as much. But overall I think it’s fantastic so far. Eliza Clark definitely knows how to write a story that gets under your skin. The short story collections range from body horror to sci-fi and is a reflection on society today. We have about four short stories left that we’re hoping to read in the next week.

Next read: One Yellow Eye by Leigh Radford

This one is for a book club discussion and not one I would normally choose to read by myself as I’m not a huge fan of dystopian or zombie books. But based on the reviews I’m hoping to be pleasantly surprised. The story follows Kesta who is searching for a solution to save her husband, who is the last person to be bitten during a zombie pandemic. This sounds completely out of my comfort zone but I am also very intrigued by it. I will keep you updated with my thoughts after I finish reading it.
