My top five books of 2025

Since it’s the last day of 2025, I’m going to share my top five reads from the past year. I’ve read so many great books and discovered a lot of new favourite authors.

Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

Out of all the books I read, I knew none could top this one. It was beautifully written, emotional and just added so much to The Hunger Games universe we already love. Seeing Haymitch’s games and all he endured was tough to read but it was impossible to stop turning the pages. It’s definitely one I’ll be rereading in the future and I can’t wait for the movie in 2026.

Annie Knows Everything by Rachel Wood

Only one contemporary book makes my top five this year, which is unusual for me. That book is Annie Knows Everything. Funny and lighthearted, it blew me away and had everything I want in a rom-com. I loved that the main character had so much growth personally and in her career. It’s being released in 2026 and isn’t one to be missed. I’ve already preordered a copy.

Season of Fear by Emily Cooper

Season of Fear is another emotional one with a powerful feminist message. The main character goes on a journey to save her sister and along the way discovers more about herself, her town and its past than she would have expected. This story is filled with twists and turns; characters you want to root for and others you can’t wait to watch perish; and a great plot that keeps you hooked from start to finish. I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.

Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

I’m hooked on Tracy Deonn’s storytelling and love this world she’s built. The whole premise focussing on Welsh mythology and using some of our language was done well and added to the story immensely. While there’s a lot going on in this book, it’s not overly complicated to get your head around. I loved all the characters and the world- building. This page-turner is a great start to the series.

Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield

This is a horror, which isn’t usually my go-to genre, but it was an engrossing and powerful read. I loved learning about the main two character’s relationship, and their journey before and after an incident under the sea. The writing was captivating and I love that it was a character-driven plot that centred around loving people and letting them go even when it’s not always what you want out of life.
